Lviv city Arsenal

Fans of weapons, those who came to visit in the city of Lviv, be sure to visit the wonderful Museum where you can freely enjoy the beauty of the works of human hands, Arsenal in Lviv is waiting for you.

The construction of the building, which houses the city Arsenal Lviv, was completed in 1556 year.

Unfortunately, today we do not know the name of the architect and the architect who erected a beautiful building.
Know only that caused by the construction of this building was a need for the defense of the city.

Lviv Arsenal 14th century

The building was conceived as the construction of the fortification of nature as it was located directly outside the fortress walls.
The structure is made from durable stone that was out knowledgeable people outside the city, and was delivered on horseback to the construction site. The rectangular shape of the building was given the opportunity to use it for defense purposes.

The structure itself was two stories and had a small window that served simultaneously and embrasures for guns.
In Soviet times, the Archaeological community in the place where stood the old Arsenal building, excavations were conducted in the Tower and found the first floor of the Arsenal, built approximately in the fourteenth century.

Nowadays, you can only see part of the old building and the moat, which was defended earlier approach to the Arsenal.

Fort turned into Arsenal

The building was erected for the purpose of storage of the weapon, which in peacetime is not needed. In the Arsenal worked many artisans monitored held weapons.
But, subsequently, it was decided not only to keep weapons, but also to produce it.

For this purpose, were invited local professionals who already had experience in the manufacture of weapons. Also were involved and foreign masters who took a very large fee for their services.

Foreign gunsmiths at the same time and made the weapons and trained local craftsmen overseas tricks.
A little later, they founded and also foundry, which served to ensure that they produced guns and the nucleus, which could defend the city.
Subsequently, guns and manufactured weapons were sold within the country and beyond its borders.

Why Arsenal became a prisoner

It is known that in Lviv city Arsenal also prisoners were kept, the Cossacks and the Ukrainian insurgents. Thus, the Arsenal has turned into some sort of prison.

This could be explained by the fact that the walls of the Armoury had a large thickness, there was also a deep cellars, and above all, the building is well guarded.

The city government decided that the best place to hide the guilty before the state they do not find. In the same room subsequently equipped the torture room, right next to this room was the home of the executioner himself.

Often the work was heard screams that came from the cellars, testified that the cat is doing its dirty work.

The Philosophy Of Arsenal

Manual Arsenal had a philosophical mind, the proof of this can be seen in two inscriptions, which were placed directly above the entrance.

One of the inscriptions reads, the weapons and the law adorn the city, and weapons to defend peace. The second inscription was similar in spirit to the City, who in peace time anticipates the danger in the future will be happy.

As you can see, the philosophy of Arsenal clear, and she preached that power everything and everyone is up in arms.

Like it or not, probably not judge us, but today we can admire as the structure itself, and so many wonderful exhibits represented there.

Of course this is not the original building, and capital restored, but nevertheless, even this structure we see today may give us the spirit of antiquity, and to move us in Lviv city Arsenal of that ancient time.
